Saish Jaiswal
PhD Student · Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Madras
I am a PhD student in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, advised by Prof. Manikandan Narayanan in the Bioinformatics and Integrative Data Science (BIRDS) Lab. I am a former Prime Minister’s Research Fellow (PMRF).
My research focuses on developing machine learning and signal processing frameworks for genomic sequence analysis, with applications in species classification and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) prediction — particularly in Mycobacterium tuberculosis. I design scalable, data-driven models that learn directly from raw genomic sequences, capturing both local and global patterns without heavy reliance on prior biological assumptions.
Research
Advances in whole-genome sequencing have enabled unprecedented access to biological data across diverse organisms, from microbes to complex pathogens. Extracting meaningful insights from such high-dimensional, structured genomic data remains a significant computational challenge. I develop machine learning models that bridge statistical modeling and modern representation learning to build robust, interpretable, and generalizable approaches that contribute to both computational biology and real-world healthcare challenges.
